Vintage Argentine Football. River Plate & Independiente 1952 team pictures. Check out more included Boca Juniors, Rosario Central & Newell Old Boys at this great blog ..
I got so excited when I saw this post. My dad has some old copies of El Gráfico with lots of hand-colored photographs from the 40s and 50s.
These particular photos are pretty amazing: The 1952 season brought River Plate its first National title since 1947, one year before a footballer’s strike in Argentina. Independiente was the hottest scoring team in the league, finishing third overall with an impressive 72 goals.
All overshadowed, though, compared to River’s 1947 title. The team scored a batshit crazy 90 goals and allowed only 30 thanks to goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo and legendary forward Alfredo DiStefano, who scored 27 times in the final iteration of “La Máquina”.
I don’t talk much about soccer/football on this tumblr, much less my affection for River Plate so here you go.
